Discord PFP Size: Exact Dimensions, Formats & Crop Guide

By GamerDP

Circular crop guide and pixel grid overlaid on a Discord avatar frame

Discord crops every avatar to a circle and displays it at a handful of small sizes. Upload the wrong dimensions and your picture ends up blurry, badly cropped, or with the important part cut off. This guide has the exact numbers.

Discord PFP size: the short answer

SettingValue
Recommended upload size1024 × 1024 pixels
Minimum usable128 × 128 pixels
Aspect ratio1:1 (perfect square)
Display shapeCircle (Discord crops automatically)
Max file size — standard8 MB
Max file size — animated8 MB (Nitro required)
FormatsPNG, JPG, GIF (GIF needs Nitro)

Upload a 1024×1024 square PNG and you’ll never think about this again. Discord generates every smaller size it needs from that one file.

Where each size is actually used

Discord serves different resolutions depending on context, which is why an avatar can look sharp in one place and soft in another.

LocationRendered size
Message list40 × 40
Member list32 × 32
DM sidebar32 × 32
Profile popout80 × 80
Full profile120 × 120
Your own avatar (bottom left)32 × 32

Note how small these are. Your avatar spends most of its life at 32–40 pixels. That has real design consequences, covered below.

The circle crop: what you lose

Discord crops every avatar to a circle inscribed in the square. Roughly 21% of a square image falls outside that circle — all of it in the corners.

What this means in practice:

  • Never put anything important in the corners. Text, logos and signatures placed there get cut.
  • Centre your subject. A face positioned off-centre will be clipped on one side.
  • Leave a margin. Keep about 10% breathing room inside the circle so nothing touches the edge.

A quick way to check before uploading: draw a circle over your square image in any editor. Anything outside it is gone.

Designing for 32 pixels

This is the part most guides skip, and it matters more than the upload size.

Your avatar appears at 32–40 pixels almost everywhere. At that size, detail disappears entirely. A beautifully rendered scene becomes a smudge; fine linework becomes grey mush.

What survives at 32px:

  • High contrast. Dark subject on light background, or the reverse.
  • One clear shape. A single silhouette reads; a busy composition doesn’t.
  • Bold colour. Saturated colours stay distinguishable when detail is gone.
  • A face filling the frame. Close crops work; full-body shots become a dot.

What disappears:

  • Text of any size — it’s unreadable below about 64px.
  • Thin outlines and fine detail.
  • Low-contrast or pastel palettes.
  • Anything with more than two or three focal points.

Test it yourself: shrink your avatar to 32×32 in any image editor and look at it. If you can’t tell what it is, neither can anyone else.

File size limits

The 8 MB cap is generous for a static image — a 1024×1024 PNG is typically well under 1 MB. It becomes a real constraint only for animated avatars.

If an animated avatar is rejected for size:

  • Reduce dimensions to 512×512 — animation doesn’t need to be large.
  • Cut the frame count. Fewer frames, or a shorter loop.
  • Reduce the colour palette. GIFs compress far better with fewer colours.
  • Trim the loop to two or three seconds.

Animated avatars (Nitro)

Animated GIF avatars require Nitro. Practical notes:

  • Discord serves animated avatars at up to 1024 pixels, not 4096.
  • The animation plays in most places but shows a static frame in some low-priority contexts.
  • If Nitro lapses, the avatar reverts to a still frame rather than disappearing.

Server avatars

Nitro also allows a different avatar per server. The size rules are identical — 1024×1024 square. The server avatar shows only inside that server; your global avatar shows everywhere else, including DMs.

Banner size, while you’re here

ElementSize
Profile banner680 × 240 (aspect 17:6)
Server icon512 × 512
Server invite splash1920 × 1080
Server banner960 × 540

The avatar overlaps the bottom-left of the banner on the full profile, so keep that corner clear of anything you want visible.

Common problems

My avatar looks blurry

The upload was too small. Discord upscales anything under the display size. Re-upload at 1024×1024.

Part of my image is cut off

The circle crop removed the corners. Recentre the subject and leave margin.

Discord says the file is too large

Over 8 MB. For static images, export as PNG at 1024×1024 — it’ll be a fraction of that. For GIFs, cut dimensions and frames.

My GIF uploaded but doesn’t animate

Animated avatars require an active Nitro subscription. Without it, Discord keeps the first frame.

The colours look different after upload

Discord re-encodes uploads and doesn’t preserve colour profiles. Export in sRGB to avoid shifts.

Quick checklist before uploading

  1. Square canvas, 1024 × 1024.
  2. Subject centred, nothing important in the corners.
  3. PNG for static, GIF only if you have Nitro.
  4. Under 8 MB.
  5. sRGB colour.
  6. Shrink to 32×32 and confirm it’s still recognisable.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Discord PFP be?

1024 × 1024 pixels, square. Discord generates every smaller size it needs from that file.

What is the minimum Discord avatar size?

128 × 128 is the practical minimum. Anything smaller gets upscaled and looks soft.

Does Discord crop profile pictures?

Yes — every avatar is cropped to a circle, removing about 21% of a square image from the corners.

What is the maximum file size for a Discord avatar?

8 MB for both static and animated avatars.

Can I use a rectangular image as my Discord PFP?

Discord will crop it to a square and then to a circle, usually badly. Crop it to a square yourself first.

What size is a Discord banner?

680 × 240 pixels, a 17:6 aspect ratio. Keep the bottom-left clear — the avatar overlaps it.
